The quiz

Read a name. Find it on the map.

That's the whole game, and it's easy to get started. Each round you see a county name, tap where you think it is, and find out right away whether you were right.

Read

The county name appears at the top. Names shared by several counties, like Washington County, come with the state.

Tap

Select a county on the map and confirm. Zoom and pan as much as you like; the whole country is there.

See

Right or wrong, you see the county's name, population and state, so every answer teaches you something.

02

Spaced repetition

See each county again just before you'd forget it

Instead of drilling everything equally often, spaced repetition times each review. Get a county right and the next review moves further out. Miss it and it comes back soon. Try it with one county:

Day 0: you see Maricopa for the first time.

A simplified illustration. The app uses FSRS, a modern, open-source scheduling algorithm also used by well-known flashcard apps, which adapts each interval to your own answer history.

    Questions

    From the app's FAQ

How many new counties should I learn each day?

Start with a small number. You will review the counties you learn today in the near future, so your daily workload is larger than just the new ones. Increase the number once you have a feel for how many reviews you do each day.

What happens if I skip scheduled reviews?

Nothing breaks. Do them when you have time. The app takes the delay into account when it schedules the next reviews.

How do I deal with too many reviews waiting?

Set your daily goal to 0 for a while. This stops new counties from being added, so you can catch up on the reviews that are already waiting. Raise the goal again when the daily load feels manageable.

    Which areas are included?

All 3,143 counties and county equivalents in the 50 states. Washington, D.C. and US territories such as Puerto Rico are not included yet.
